How much does Google Ads cost in Canada?

Google sets no minimum budget: you choose your amount and you pay per click. The real cost, though, is measured per lead, not per click. The most solid published data shows wide gaps from one industry to the next. For a small business in Quebec, plan on at least $1,000 per month in ad budget, plus management, and three to six months before judging profitability.

In short

  • Google Ads has no minimum spend; you mostly pay per click, rarely more than your maximum bid.
  • Your daily budget is an average: on some days Google spends more, but a monthly cap protects you.
  • In Quebec, Google charges GST and QST based on the address in your payments profile.
  • The number that matters is the cost per qualified lead. With the same budget, it can double or drop by half depending on how the account is set up.
  • Plan for three cost items: the ad budget, management and the landing page.

How does Google Ads bill you?

Opening an account costs nothing, and Google says so plainly: there is no minimum spend, and you set and control your own budget. Most of the time, you pay when someone clicks your ad. The price of that click is decided at each search, in an auction.

You set a maximum amount per click, but you often pay less: only what it takes to beat the advertiser ranked just below you. Ranking doesn’t depend on money alone. Google combines six factors, including your bid, the quality of the ad and landing page, and the context of the search. A relevant ad that leads to a good page can therefore pay less than a competitor who bids more.

With automated bid strategies, the cost of a click can exceed your maximum bid; that is the trade-off for letting Google adjust bids based on the likelihood of a conversion.

How does the daily budget work?

The budget you enter is an average daily budget. On some days, Google can spend up to twice that amount to take advantage of strong demand; on other days, less. Over a month, you never pay more than 30.4 times your average daily budget, which is the average number of days in a month.

Target monthly budget and the daily budget to enter in Google Ads (monthly amount divided by 30.4).
Target monthly budgetAverage daily budgetCap for a single day
$1,500$49.34$98.68
$2,500$82.24$164.47
$4,000$131.58$263.16

On the billing side, most small businesses pay automatically: Google charges the account when it reaches a payment threshold, and on the first day of each month. The threshold can increase over time. The currency is chosen once and for all when the account is created: choose the Canadian dollar.

How much does a click cost, and how much does a lead cost?

There is no reliable public benchmark for Canada. The most solid data comes from WordStream and LocaliQ: 13,474 search campaigns in the United States, between April 2025 and March 2026, in US dollars and as median values. Across all industries, the median cost per click is US$5.42 and the cost per lead is US$66.69.

Median cost per click and cost per lead, US campaigns, in US dollars (WordStream/LocaliQ, 2026).
IndustryCost per clickCost per lead
Attorneys and legal servicesUS$9.87US$131.63
Home and home improvementUS$8.33US$90.92
DentistsUS$8.00US$72.97
Industrial and commercialUS$5.87US$75.19
Business servicesUS$5.87US$93.69

Treat these figures as orders of magnitude. The Quebec market is smaller, competition varies from one city to the next, and a campaign in French doesn’t cost the same as one in English in Toronto. For your own keywords, Google’s Keyword Planner gives a range of “top of page” bids: the low end corresponds roughly to the 20th percentile of what advertisers paid, the high end to the 80th. You need to have entered your billing information to access it.

What we see with our clients

Two real examples, measured the same way: ad cost divided by the number of qualified leads, calls and forms included.

  • Frédéric Lévesque, business lawyer: an average ad cost of $31 per qualified lead over 12 months. The details are in his case study.
  • A CPA firm: $45 per qualified lead, down from $90 before we took over the account, with the same ad budget.

These results are specific to each engagement and are not a promise. Above all, they show that how the account is set up matters as much as the budget. The most common mistakes are covered in our guide on Google Ads campaigns that aren’t working.

What total budget should a small business plan for?

The real cost of Google Ads has three items, which any proposal should keep clearly apart:

The three cost items of Google Ads for a small business.
ItemWho you payWhat makes it vary
Ad budgetGoogle, directly on your cardYour industry, your region, the number of leads you want
Campaign managementThe agency or freelancer, or your own timeThe number of campaigns, the tracking, how often adjustments are made
Landing page and trackingThe agency or your web providerOne page per offer, call and form tracking

The budget threshold given above is our rule: below it, there are too few clicks to know what works, and adjustments are made blindly. The time before judging profitability is the time it takes to launch, measure and improve on real data. The first leads, for their part, usually come in within the first few weeks. To place this budget in the overall approach, see our Google Ads guide for Quebec small businesses.

For management, agencies generally charge a percentage of the ad budget, a monthly flat fee or a combination of the two. There is no reliable public survey of rates in Canada. Whatever the model, insist that the ad budget and the fees be shown separately, and that the Google Ads account be in your name.

At Kasvu, our management fees generally range from $700 to $3,000 per month, depending on the number of campaigns and pages to build. What the engagement includes is detailed on our Google Ads agency page.

Hypothetical example: from budget to the cost of a customer. Made-up figures to show the calculation, not a forecast.
Calculation stepExample
Ad budget for the month$1,600
Management, landing page and tracking$1,100
Total cost for the month$2,700
Qualified leads received27, or $100 per lead
Customers signed6, or $450 per customer
Average gross margin per customer$2,400

In this example, each customer costs $450 and leaves $2,400 in margin: the campaign is profitable. With a margin of $400 per customer, the same campaign would lose money, despite a reasonable cost per lead. That is why we always start from what a customer is worth to you, and from how many leads your team turns into contracts, before setting a budget.

What changes in Quebec

Quebec’s Charter of the French Language requires commercial advertising to be in French; a bilingual version is allowed if French is clearly predominant (s. 58). For commercial publications online, the guide from the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF), Quebec’s French language office, also asks that a French version at least equivalent be offered, as easy to access as the other. For Google Ads, that means ads and a landing page in French for your Quebec customers.

If you also serve English-speaking customers, plan for keywords, ads and pages in each language. Since September 2026, Google has been removing the language setting from campaigns on the Search Network: it chooses which ad to show on its own, based on the language of the search and the languages the person understands. A bilingual person can therefore see your English ad after a search in French. Well-written ads in each language remain the best way to reach each group of customers.

Finally, several trades have strong seasons: roofing, landscaping, heat pumps. The cost per click rises when everyone advertises at the same time. Google offers seasonality adjustments, designed for short events of one to seven days; for a season lasting several months, it is better to plan the budget month by month.

How can you pay less per lead?

  • A landing page dedicated to the advertised offer, rather than your homepage.
  • Negative keywords added every week from the search terms report.
  • Call and form tracking, to know which campaigns produce leads and cut the others.
  • Geographic targeting limited to people located in your service area.
  • Ads in French written for the specific search, not for the broadest word.

This work is the heart of serious Google Ads campaign management. Whether you do it yourself or hand it to an agency, it does more for your cost per lead than a bigger budget.

Before you set your budget

Let’s talk about what Google Ads should bring you.

We look at what a new customer is worth to you, your industry, your region and your current account, if you have one. You come away with a clear idea of what a lead can cost you, what it can bring in and the ad budget to plan for, shown separately from our fees. The first conversation with François comes with no commitment.
